Battery-operated Machinery

Battery-operated Machinery

For years, reliable battery-operated machinery was a pipe dream. While battery technology was being explored as early as 1912, it wasn’t until the 1970s that lithium batteries became available commercially.

Lithium to Lithium-ion

Before the advent of lithium-ion technology, the idea of using batteries for something like an electric leaf blower would have seemed insane. Lithium is the lightest metal and has a large electrochemical potential, giving it a high power-to-weight ratio. But the metal itself is unstable, leading to dangers when you attempt to recharge the batteries. A stable solution was developed in the early 90s, with the advent of lithium-ion batteries. These sacrificed much of the energy density of lithium for a battery that could be safely charged and discharged. Even without a pure ion battery, it was still twice as much energy density as the then-standard nickel-cadmium combination.

Since then, manufacturers have been innovating, improving the safety, reliability and energy density of the lithium-i0n battery. These batteries don’t require priming when you first buy them. You charge them, and they’re ready to go. They also don’t lose energy nearly as fast – a lithium-ion battery discharges its energy at half the pace of a nickel-cadmium battery. Crucially for battery-powered garden equipment, speciality power cells are possible, which enable a higher current for power tools.

How should you maintain your Battery-operated Machinery?

Ideally, it would be best to store your batteries in a relatively cool place to help slow the ageing process. The ideal temperature is around 15C. It’s also recommended to keep a partial charge in the batteries (40% is recommended) to prevent potential loss. Luckily with our Irish weather, it’s not hard to keep a space at 15C! With most of Stihl’s electric power tool range, it’s fine to store them in a dry place, such as in your garden shed. Whether it’s an automated lawnmower or just lithium-ion powered shears, you can trust it’ll stay in good condition.

For landscapers and those who need the best performance and reliability, we recommend professional battery kits. These are the highest quality batteries and accessories to help ensure you get the work done.
