Are Electric Scooters Legal in Ireland? This is a question some customers are asking us, and we all want to make sure we’re on the right side of the law. We are a major provider of E-scooters in Ireland. All our products are okay to use around your yard and in areas that are not used by motorised traffic. But they are in a legal grey area when it comes to usage on public roads. Recently, TD Alan Farrell introduced a bill to regulate the use of E-scooters and electric bikes on public roads.
While many people use electric transport on roads and walkways, it’s not technically legal. Currently, road traffic laws do not have any mention of them. Not because they’re not allowed, but because electric scooters are new and the rules haven’t been updated yet. One of the main reasons for introducing this new bill is to allow for electric scooters. It also allows new companies to offer services in Ireland (i.e. Bike Sharing and other services). Although these laws are coming about, we do not advocate for the use of electric scooters on motorways — in particular for those under eighteen — as there are safety concerns even if it does become legal. We also recommend full protective gear be worn at all times and to use your scooter in areas without traffic.
Are Electric Scooters Legal In Ireland?
The new bill will allow us to use electric bikes and e-scooters on public roads without the use of a provisional driver’s license. Irish laws are slow to change. This, of course, was fine in the last century, but as technological progress accelerates, we are starting to see how the old systems are struggling to keep up with the pace of innovation. Personal transportation is one such area. As battery technology improves, we will continue to see more and more personal transportation come out such as e-scooters and hoverboards.
The Future of Electric Transport in Ireland
We’re likely going to see a revolution in electric transport over the next decade. Not just with “micro-mobility vehicles” such as E-scooters and Electric blades, and probably new forms that haven’t been invented yet! There may also be a revolution with regular cars. As self-driving systems become popular in the next decade or two, we may see fewer cars on the roads or parked up on the streets. We may even see streets and roadways becoming reclaimed by new forms of transportation. It’s an exciting time to be alive and to have the opportunity to try out all these cool new gadgets!
